Coach Sam, not Uncle Sam
A contingent of Georgians weren't cheering for the Atlanta Hawks Tuesday night. They were at Philips Arena to watch Sam Mitchell coach his Toronto Raptors to victory. Mitchell and former Columbus High teammate Marc Upshaw invited a bus load of people to the game to tell them more about the foundation they founded to help Columbus youth. It started with a summer basketball camp. Now it is spreading to a learning center at Wilson/Chase Apartments headed by former basketball coach and school administrator James Patrick. The final step will be a scholarship program. Mitchell, the NBA's Coach of the Year last season, played 13 years in the league with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Indiana Pacers.
