A Rose is a Rose

Those who remember the years of the Stocking Strangler in Columbus would be surprised at the academic atomosphere of author David Rose's presentation Thursday night at the library. Those were the years we put up burglar bars, outside lights and deadbolt locks. Those were the years we shivered when we heard a siren.

Rose, a British journalist, has written "The Big Eddy Club," a book about the stranglings and convicted killer Carlton Gary. Whatever your point of view, it's an interesting read. And it will make you think. When I heard Rose and local historian Billy Winn were speaking, I smelled fireworks. I thought the Q&A would be full of landmines. But it wasn't. It was a civil, attentive crowd. Rose talked his book. Billy talked about local lynchings and the slaying of Dr. Thomas Brewer downtown. It was not a night the Chamber of Commerce would enjoy.

You'll hear opinions of Rose's book and his conclusions around town. But read the book for yourself. You'll get a new snapshot of our town.

Watch for my review of "The Big Eddy Club" in Friday's paper. Many of you haven't waited on a review. You've been grabbing up copies of the book like crazy. I watched them hauling books from the store room on Sunday. People were buying as fast as they stacked them.
